I also would like to express my support for providing torrents. Others have already said most of what I was going to say.
For me it comes down to variety being the spice of life. Giving people another option to download the game will always be welcomed by at least some of the players. Torrents are a great tool for those among us who value being in control of things. Let me illustrate this with a small story about me trying to install the client of a certain Korean-owned MMO. Their downloader app sucked epically! No minimize button, always on top and the best was it deleted 3 hours worth of downloaded data when it quit even though the installation failed... Luckily after some digging I found an official torrent and everything went off without a hitch. Cannot run out of time! There is infinite time...

Torrent is such an unprofessional way to distribute anything. I wouldn't go this route if you expect to be a serious contender in the gaming industry. The legality of it is the wrong argument, when people think of torrent they think of 'illegal downloads', whether the system is legal or not. It won't lend any credibility to what you are doing. I would also love to see the numbers and/or facts behind "you will have more exposure to more people if you do it his way". What a load of crap. Word of mouth and having a rock-solid game. Look up Torchlight(Runic Games) and Grim Dawn(Crate Entertainment) and check out their business models. These are going to be your biggest competitors in the Indie market.

" Strangely enough, Runic mentioned in an interview that somewhere around 25 million copies of Torchlight were downloaded through torrents. That sounds like some serious exposure.. "Instead of praising what you do not understand, try understanding what you do not praise."

Well, then I stand corrected on that point!
I thought they were fully through steam or their own servers. At least it was when I bought my copy of it. Personally, I don't like torrents. You don't always know what you are getting. Just seems to be a risky way to do things. |

Downloaded through torrents illegally. Torchlight was not distributed through torrents officially. That's not surprising considering that you actually had to buy Torchlight.

Perhaps I should've mentioned that they were unpaid-for copies.. Still, they figure even if only 5% of them go on to buy the game, that's 5% they didn't have before.
Edit: tpapp beat me to it, and put it a better way. "Instead of praising what you do not understand, try understanding what you do not praise."

Ok. That makes more sense.
That proves my point though. You don't want to officially release something through a portal that is used and known for downloading illegal copies of things. Not a good way to enter the gaming development industry. :) |

Last time I downloaded a full EVE-Online client there was a torrent.
But something more recent: Hellgate Global provided an official torrent and World of Tanks has it's official downloader powered by bittorrent too. It has something of stigma, true. But as others have pointed out it's not exactly a beginner level technology so it would probably not be the only option anyway. But for those of us that know what torrents are and how to use them it could be a welcome alternative. Cannot run out of time! There is infinite time...
