PoE client as Torrent download

That's all nonsense. Torchlight wasn't an online only game, and many online only games are distributed EXTREMELY successfully through torrents.

The vast majority of torrent users, which should be everyone but old farts now, know it's an extremely amazing downloading protocol and not exclusively a portal for illegal software.

People who exclusively think that torrenting is illegal are simply ignorant. Why would we want to play with a bunch of ignorant people anyway?

Zeto while torrenting has it's advantages people like direct downloads as well. If you have a reliable computer and connection. Then you can Click and forget. Torrents require a small amount more work which some people dislike. Not everyone that games knows a lot about computers.

Also torrents have gotten a bad rep more because of the music and media industry than regular people. There is nothing wrong or illegal about P2P torrenting. If i wanted to make a torrent to show zeto pictures of my cats than that is not illegal in anyway. Of course we can't deny a lot of illegal activity goes on with torrents in mind. The reason Direct download is not used in these processes is because honestly it is a lot more risky and less efficient.

Just to point out, it has absolutely zero to do with ignorance. I have been working with and on computers probably before you were even a twinkle. So yeah, I guess that makes me an old fart. Every torrent site I have ever visited is full of crap with links all over the place that take several clicks before you even get to what you want. Not to mention some of the questionable advertisements that pop up, hence the stigma.

Perhaps if you 'kids' weren't doing all kinds of crazy stuff and pirating things through such devices it would have a little more credibility in the real world.

It's unprofessional. Period. Something I don't expect you 'kids' to understand :). When I want to download a game I want a link that does exactly that. Not because I don't understand computers or technology because as a developer, I understand the user experience needs to be simple and direct and with no nonsense. When I go to a site to do anything that's exactly what I expect.

You'd be surprised how the large majority of people do not know anything about torrents beyond their existence. The days of Napster and Gnutella and Kazaa and Limewire when practically everyone shared files are long over. These days people get everything they want from services like iTunes and Netflix.

The real problem with torrents for PoE is that they can't be updated. That means people will have to download an old version of the game via torrent and then download all the patches from the update server to bring it up to date. That's two separate downloading sessions as opposed to just one.

The updating/patching is a good point. I love netflix :)

This is not a problem at all. You simply make and publish a new torrent. It's not like it requires 2 kilos of fairy dust to make one. Also, by far most of the online games I tried so far had huuuge amounts of patches to download even though they were normal downloads.

The amount of patching necessary after installation is entirely dependent on how much effort the company invests into providing current downloads. Has nothing to do with the type of download.

Kempeth the file size is not always indicative of the size of the update. Uploading art takes a lot more space than simply reworking the balance, but I can tell you right now the balance is the hardest thing to get right. Art does take a lot of time too though. Tweaking a game will take up little space, but can have a drastic effect on the game.

Most people will want one download and then start playing the game. With torrenting if it is not always updated then people will have to wait another hour when those patches could have just been released with the download in the first place.

I think you misunderstand me. Whether you tweak one game variable or implement an entire game act - update is update and will require some kind of deployment.

Lets assume Alice and Bob are new users downloading the game for the first time.

Bob favors traditional downloads and gets the installation from the game website or some mirror and installs that setup.

Alice takes the torrent from the website instead. She'll be downloading the EXACT same file Bob did.

Any patching left to do will have to be performed by both Alice and Bob. The only time this is not the case is if the company publishing the game is too lazy to keep both deployment vectors up-to-date.

The argument has been made that torrents cannot be updated, and will thus incur undue patching for their users. The first part is correct but the conclusion is wrong. When I am downloading a big file via http or ftp the server cannot change the file I'm download somewhere halfway through the process. I can either complete the download and patch later or abort it and start downloading the newest version (whether that is any faster overall is a different story).

Compared to the many many steps that have to be done to create a new setup, making a new torrent for it is a tiny effort. Also I'm pretty sure a good build system can do that for you too.

Upload torrent to Pirate Bay. Check for that same torrent after 1 month on Google or any other search engine. End shocked by amount of other torrent websites having that same torrent. Than check how many millions daily hits those torrent websites have combined.

Torrent surpases any other FREE advertising method by huge amounts.
