PoE client as Torrent download

The cause actually is an important factor for this discussion though, since it can be used to minimize the impact of torrent downloading. Ultimately, the quickest fix for torrents causing latency is to cap your download and upload speeds for the torrent.

If you cap torrent downloading/uploading to a % of your total available bandwidth during load, it's not really possible to experience significant latency due to the torrent unless something else is going on. More than likely that is what is not happening when latency becomes an issue if it's due to torrents.

Finally, some information about game lag... for the most part lag is a combination of traffic latency + processing latency + dropped packets... and of those, dropped packets are the major culprit. A single dropped packet can cost you max response timeout plus another traffic trip and processing, which is huge compared to typical latencies. Much of the time nothing can be done about those though.

Ultimately torrents are all about the implementation. Ideally if you are doing nothing else you can hit max speed, which is often not possible from a single source if you have a good connection... and if you are doing something else, you can throttle it down to a point where it won't affect what you are doing.

Additionally, torrent downloading is especially good for people with unreliable or slow internet speeds. Torrent checksums will prevent transfer error, they can be started and stopped, and they can stream incremental updates easily. They are by far the best downloading technology we have right now... and possibly will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

awesome! Thanks for the information.

You guys do realize most people are going to click the download now button and forget. I mean torrenting is great, but i don't think it is all that important. This is not an argument about whether torreting is better than regular downloading.

It is a conversation about whether it should be included as an option or not. I think it should included. I think it is never a bad thing to give the user more options.

Also Wit, I suggest if you have a problem with him take him up on some PvP come this august. There is no better way to settle a dispute than by fighting to the death ;)
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
Yeah but I suck at PvP in almost every game I have ever played... except Demons Souls, I was quite the menace.

But no, I don't have a problem with Zeto or anyone else. I was just trying to maintain discourse as civil as possible.

Well not everyone has the same manners. People being rude on the internet is inevitable you can't stand in the rain and expect not to get wet. Either way of all the forums i frequent i have to say by and far this one is actually well organized and most people are polite and very helpful. Plus most discussion has been very constructive to the game.

lol i dont get you zeto, 1st up you say it does nothing and now your saying it does or could have an affect if its taking the majority of your bandwidth :-S

i dont know where you live but the majority of people do have pretty poor broadband, throttling your P2P connections or limiting it to anything respectful does not help a whole lot

i just did a test on an FPS game, no downloading i was at 130-150 ping on east coast server, downloading at 200kb/s i was at 220-250 ping and at max speed of 650 kb/s the ping spiked at over 800.

from what i know POE servers will be american. sure they will no doubt have EU servers at some point but i will force block any P2P for clients if its built in like some games have. but i cant see them doing it
Just thought I'd note that if the game client was officially downloaded via torrent, GGG would provide their own torrent client. Basically you'd download a 30or so mb program from the server, run it, and it would start torrenting the game (from other players and the server if not enough players are available). But you wouldn't know it was a torrent; all you'd see is the download progress bar going along.

Yep most discussions are. I am just trying to make people understand that if your goal is:

a. get my point across and try to convince someone else that I am right.

then you shouldn't begin by insulting their intelligence or insinuating anything like that. All that will do is cause the other person to get snippy, and pretty soon we have people screaming at each other for no reason.

Now, if your goal is

b. Make my point and to hell with you.

Well that's fine too, but then you can't expect the person to listen to you, and knowingly doing (b) and also knowing that the result of (b) will be angering someone else, well then, you're just a troll.

Lastly, the excuse "that's the way I am, deal with it" is something that children say. We are part of a society, virtual or actual, and in both you can either act in a way that is conducive to that society or not. But, you can't knowingly not follow the norms and also expect to be fully embraced within the culture that perpetuates those norms.

I'm all about constructive conversation :) The end results aren't always agreed upon though.

@eversorgod: http://www.formortals.com/why-bittorrent-causes-so-much-jitter-high-ping-and-how-to-fix-it/

That article shows how and why torrents can cause ping problems. It also shows, essentially what I said... that increased ping is caused by speeds near max and excessive connections and routing issues.

Despite some of what he writes being somewhat colored, ultimately his conclusion in that write-up is that it's an implementation issue just like I stated originally. His proposal was to implement a game-mode software prioritizer in torrents, or to implement QoS on ISP routers (not going to happen.)

On a practical level what can be done now is simply limit the number of users that you connect to, to something your ISP and hardware can handle.

And as of note, your paraphrasing of the conversation thus far as per what I've stated is wrong as well.

I actually take it the other way. Inserting comments that are ambiguous, and letting the reader decide what is meant is the *best* test of disposition and expectation... it's sorta like the Rorschach test for forums.

Those that take it as a personal attack are most often irrational and prone to letting emotion color their decision making... they are guided by their status as the victim and actually seek out that negative status.

Logical people and various other types only see the ambiguous piece of information for what it is, without adding their own personal flavor to it... because they know that without clarification ambiguous content has no meaning.

I personally consider those that fail the test to be mental children, regardless of age or how nice they appear to be. Someone once told me a few things that I keep dear to me:

"There can be no progress without resistance" and "You can never know a person's true colors except through adversity." You slap those two things together, and you get a quick measure of a person. It's sorta hard to do on a forum, but eventually we'll all be playing this game, and lots of people will be throwing around commentary, and it'll be nice to know who to actually listen to and who to dismiss.

Zeto,

I agree with what you said but I don't see the relevance. Are you saying I was being ambiguous? Or, that you weren't? Or that the information was ambiguous? (last one makes no sense!)

I don't think you were, and I am confident that what I said was pretty clear as well.

But, I will elaborate.

If a racist man said "I'm racist, deal with it." you wouldn't take that as a valid response, similarly if someone said "I steal, it's what I do." or "I hate children, and like watching them cry." or "I'm just a liar." Now, all of those things may be true, but they aren't excuses. Those also aren't reasons that you could give to any rational person in hopes of convincing that person to accept your stance on race, or child care, or ethics. Assuming you want to convince, or at least demonstrate that your stance is reasonable.

Also, attacking someone (explicitly or not), and then saying "well if you take it as a attack, you're a child." is also a bad thing to do. Clever, but not good. It's clear that you understand that what you said was offensive, if you didn't, you wouldn't have argued the way you did.

The quotes you offer are nice, But, I've found that people in adverse situations typically revert to self preservation (a basic instinctual act) and as such, that doesn't show anything of what they are as a person, but only what kind of animal they are. Also, I don't think you can see a person in true adversity or extreme resistance while discussing things on a video game forum.
