I like Japanese Swords, Katana and the like. Not because of weeby shit or anime or whatever. More because of 1960's samurai movies, Yojimbo/Sanjuro/Hara-Kiri/Zatoichi films, etc.

Have you seen the Kenshin movies? Thirteen Assassins? There's also the new Blade of the Immortal flick. Some really, really good chanbara in the movies these past ten years or so.

(And for the best animated sword fight I've ever seen, check out Sword of the Stranger.)

I have not seen many "recent" chambara films. Most of what I have seen/love is like 1960's to early 70's. Lone Wolf and Cub would be the exception to that, but those are... silly as fuck. Good and fun, but not really "great films" in the way that Hara-Kiri or Seven Samurai are things I saw first in classes in college. What I have seen from recent years has been... okay at best. CGI and silly effects tend to ruin it for me, and there tends to be a lot of that, at least in what I've seen (though no specifics are coming to mind of course). I want to say I've seen Thirteen Assassins, maybe on Netflix? But... it did not stick with me obviously :P

Trust me at least with Kenshin. Very little cg. VERY good choreography, wirework and stunts. Best 4-on-1 fight I've ever seen. Those movies were WAY better than they had any right to be.

Thirteen Assassins is favourably compared to Kurosawa flicks. Take that as you will.

As for Lone Wolf, I was raised on shit like Shogun Assassin. That dubbing man. Those blood hoses. Glorious.

I'll definitely check Thirteen Assassins out again. Kenshin too if I can find it. Is it Rurouni Kenshin related, or something else? I have seen the Kenshin OVAs and actually found the first one to be pretty good back in the day. Wirework you say? ehh...
