Crafting is officially garbage in POE
Orbs are always worth more to someone else than they are to you. This is the pain of crafting.

You know, I just thought I'd throw this out there also. Everyone bitches about crafting in PoE but let me just say that I have played a LOT of games over the years. In every online game I've played where it is possible to trade with another player, it is almost always a better option to sell your trading items and buy the finished goods instead of crafting it yourself.
It is usually faster, and a better use of your money. This isn't a new thing to PoE. Crafting is mostly for the hardcore of the hardcore, who really want to invest a ton of wealth and time into something. It is not for the faint of heart in any game. " I don't either. Unfortunately, the "crafting" system is what it is, and it is based on a memoryless RNG. At some point, someone at GGG computed which odds Tyrannical (and every other mod, mind you!) should roll at so that the distribution of good gear on the server, over time, is about what they want it to be. They know how bad the odds are, and unless there's a horrible bug somewhere those odds are intentional. In my opinion, D3 and PoE both have a relatively unrewarding endgame, where character progression (as in total character strength, not character level) is determined by low-odds drops and, to a large extent, mundane trading. However, I would not make a new character in D3, because the game just isn't interesting enough (to me) to warrant it. I will happily make 2-3 new characters per league in Path of Exile for the foreseeable future, because playing with the skill tree is fun and rewarding up until shortly into the endgame map grind. For me, PoE's most fun parts (again, to me) are in cruel, merciless, and early mapping (where the costs haven't gone completely out of control yet). I would not continue playing with a character if I needed to roll a tyrannical mod on a 6L weapon (already hard enough to find) in order to continue progressing. It isn't worth it. However, that doesn't make PoE a bad game, and GGG hasn't failed as far as I am concerned. $0.02 IGN: SplitEpimorphism

pretty much, crafting mats are there for super, ludicrous rich people who want to Craft the absolute 100% best item possible.
I've seen the term "trickle up economics" used, and its true. you buy decent gear from traders, who then obsessively waste stupid amounts of crafting mats to make the ultimate item. Trying to craft on your own just won't work. |

I agree with Syrio Forel on this one. You definitely hit a wall in PoE where trying to advance just stops becoming fun. It is around the same time I stop on most of my characters and just reroll. Rerolling is fun and everything up that wall is a blast.

I agree with all these points, but I do feel it should be hard, actually REALLY hard to roll a 100% 6 top tier mod perfect item. But I feel that one not-perfect top tier roll should NOT be THIS HARD. 3600 tries and still no? I would be happy with the lowest end of the range, I just want to see that it can actually happen. Also, I have the "good items" on standard (legacy 6L Shav, Legacy Soul taker etc.), from trading of course. I decided this time, in domination, I wanted to craft an item. Just one good one to see if I can do it. What I'm finding however is that there's no "persistence pays off" here I can't do it, because the game won't let me. It just won't roll it. 3600 wasted, what's another 3600 gonna do? NOTHING

" I agree with that. Sometimes RNG just takes a shit all over you and wastes your time. There is no light at the end of the tunnel when RNG is involved. "Danger is like jello, there's always room for more."

Its not really "crafting". You are all using the wrong word. Its just like the gambling in d2. You use your orbs on your gear and you are gambling each time. You have to way to control the possible outcomes, there is no stat that makes it easier, you are basically sitting at the bar pulling pull tabs until you win the pot. Most nights you just walk out broke.
But seriously... If the gambling was as good as everyone wants it to be it would just be silly. |

" Lets be fair... I think you can hold down shift. ;) I understand your frustration, I personally would never use the alt-regal-exalt "crafting"...I prefer to think of it as gambling. I get sockets/links right and then my chaos orbs become "directes drops" where I simply get rare items of that type until I get something good. It takes a lot of patience after Lv65 or so but thats the kind of player I am. |
