Brutality Support

There is no muddle.

There are two ways to APPLY damage: via a spell (a skill, wich does not use weapon damage and has the "spell" gem tag) or via an attack (a skill wich does use weapon damage and has the "attack" gem tag).

The distinction spell vs attack is firm and mutually exclusive in POE. Nothing that says "attack(s)" will work for spells, and nothing that says "spell(s)" will work for attacks. Only things that explicitly say "spells AND attacks" or "global" will work for both.

But this has absolutely nothing to do with the various damage TYPES.

There are five damage TYPES: Physical, Cold, Lightning, Fire and Chaos.

The method of application (spell vs attack) does NOT determine the damage type (Physical, Cold, Lightning, Fire, Chaos).

Both spells and attacks can use any of those five damage types.

In case of an attack the base damage is determined by your weapon and other sources of flat damage to attacks.

(E.g. "The Tempest", a bow wich has no physical damage: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/The_Tempest.

Try to imagine it like this: Wether you smash someones head with a conventional hammer or with Fitzliputzli's magical toothbrush - it's always an attack, and the damagetype is determined by the object used, not by your way of smashing the head.)

In case of a spell the base damage is determined by the skillgem itself and other sources of flat damage to spells.
(A summoned sandstorm and a summoned lightningbolt will deal different kinds of damage, but it's always a spell, isn't it?).

Brutality does not care about the method of application. It doesn't care about spell or attack. It cares about the damagetype. You deal Lightningdamage, and that's why it doesn't work.

Yes, I looked at Vortex Blade - Fantastic phusical damage as a spell....

"...just physical or magic damage"

Don't you think that when a character uses a sword it have to be physical damage at any way? Cos physical damage with a sword as a spell sounds unnatural?

will - Physical damage as a spell- lead to a muddle?

Thanks for your help

I think you are thinking too hard. A sword can do fire damage, my character is using Flicker Strike with the Oro's Sacrafice sword and is doing 100% fire damage, no physical. Physical damage with a sword as a spell would be unnatural but you wouldn't be using the sword to create the spell. If the sword had a mod to enhance the spell then it would help you. But you don't need the sword for the spell, you can even use spells unarmed if you wanted to.
