[3.10] From League Starter to Shaper – Cheap, Tanky, Fast and Fun Physical ST – Very Detailed Guide

This build peaked my interest but it's been quite some leagues since I played a phys character. Am I correct to assume that the Impale version of this build would be especially preferable in 3.9 with all the expected bossing?
Yes, impale scales damage as you deal more hits to the enemy. This is pointless for mobs but works very well on bosses.

Did you ever feel like the lack of proj speed was hampering your clearspeed compared to other ST builds like rangers which naturally pick up a bit more? I was just noticing your ST range seemed a bit short.

Also, I was playing around in the PoB and noticed that Brutality was better than Inc crit damage, even accounting for not being able to use Sin's Rebirth and Atziris Promise. (You can use a sulfur flask in place of one of them, and consc. ground provides 100% inc crit for enemies standing on it now)

Yes of course more projectile speed would increases clear speed as it would give more range. But getting PS means not getting something else so you end up losing damage against bosses which is where it really counts. But if you prefer clear speed you can use faster projectiles with ST while clearing. I don't want to have to switch 2 gems though. That would be a hassle. We need to wait for PoE 2.0 to get 8 6-L.

I can't run the numbers now but i highly doubt brutality+sulphur gives more damage than Atziri's and Sin's combined. Also sulphur creates consecrated ground under the player not under the enemies.

You should test out brutality in PoB vs inc crit, its really a huge difference. (I tested it with your PoB and Brutality really does outperform Sins+Atziris, and tbh its not even that close. Either way, Maim outperforms Inc Crit, especially w/o the diamond flask up)

I made some edits to the tree for a bit more efficiency by not pathing through the Resourcefulness wheel in the shadow area and dropping Depth Perception (you still maintain 100% accuracy without it, so you can pickup Ballistic Mastery. This is enough for ST to go to the edge of the screen, while maintaining the same level or more dmg, and the same lifepool. This tree also has room for alira, which makes leaguestart a good bit easier.

(you can pickup Depth Perception instead of the 3pointer jewel for league start as well)

About the sulphur flask, for bosses you are in melee range, so the consc. ground will be under both you and the boss, and bosses is the only place where damage really matters anyway.

PoB: https://pastebin.com/aj95mV7d

Please take a look and see if I'm missing anything. This will probably be my league starter :D

I'm currently traveling so for the next couple of days I don't have time to test things in depth. I did briefly test crit+atziri's+sin's vs brutality+sulphur and crit wins. It's not by a huge margin but it wins. I don't know how you get the results you mention. One of us is doing something wrong.
As for Maim, enemies are already maimed by F&S. Adding maim to ST calculates the maim effect twice. This is a bug of PoB and as far as I know hasn't been fixed. I may be wrong here but that's what I think. So Maim is not beter than crit.

I'll check this when I have time. However, projectile speed means the returning projectiles will have traveled further and so they will do less damage when they hit the bosses. So by getting speed you do clear faster but reduce boss damage. I think I explain all this in the guide.

Also I can't agree on the sulphur flask. There is no way of knowing if a boss is actually affected by it because there is no icon. But almost all bosses move. Shaper, guardians, Elder, his guardians etc. So even if they are affected by it when you use the flask you lose the effect when they move. So it's very unreliable compared to the usual utility flasks like Sin's and Atziri's.

Would this work with Champion and go for Impale + Fortify + War Banner?
Yeah, let us know when you get a chance to test out those things. I think the difference in our PoBs is the fact that I have LocalIdentity's forked pob which calculates impale correctly (since openarl left out a bunch of stuff in pob): https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/deon82/localidentitys_path_of_building_v141514_fork/

That's probably why, since brutality would drastically increase impale dps. The Brutality more dmg mod is actually really insane, 59% more damage vs inc crit only giving about 27% more.

The maim gem has 30% more phys damage on the gem itself, disregarding the inc phys damage taken by enemies (which pob correctly calculates and disregards). You can see this because Maim on the ST links in PoB is an exact 30.0% more dps when maim is linked with Flesh and Stone, and more when maim isn't linked to F&S.

You're right about the proj speed = less damage thing, because the projectiles start doing their triple hit thing farther out from point blank range.

Yeah, the sulphur flask isn't really a huge deal, just ups crit a bit. For certain bosses it's definitely unreliable. You can also get the Acceleration suffix on magic flasks. Brutality beats out inc crit and the two other flasks without it anyway.

Thanks for the input and reading through these text walls lol.

Impale and champion are a good combination but I can't tell you anything more as it's a totally different build (tree, ascendancy, damage mitigation etc).

I didn't know that fork existed. Calculating impale damage is hard because the first five hits deal different damage and it levels off after that so the DPS for the first second (assuming you do 5 hits per second) is lower than the second second. I guess that PoB shows you the steady DPS with max impales (default 5). Or maybe I'm missing something obvious because it's late.
Anyway it's good to have this discussion and you may very well be right about brutality since we make heavy use of the impale mechanism (especially if you use the watcher's eye) which is ignored by the normal PoB.

we're updating monster Armour growth to be something that noticeably impacts physical damage characters when fighting highly armoured monsters.

Impale is significantly affected by the higher armour values because of how its damage is dealt in many small hits.

I'm afraid nerf hammer is coming to this build
