Plans to reintroduce the old GUIs?
" the best trademarks of companies have no relation to the actual products or special meanings but work because people recognize the ever changing products being from that company. most companies spend an awful lot of money for establishing trademarks. to be recognized by their customers. your game got several graphic overhauls but you kept your trademark for so many years and wondered that players revolted when you simply wanted to exchange it. you probably never asked yourself, why? hint, hint: it most likely has no sexist background. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

" reminds me of people in my area, manually putting the mercedes star on their old (not mercedes) cars. (yes, some really did that). yep, and mercedes probably sued them for misusing their trademark? no because it's free advertizement and adorement for that brand. edit: and people probably would even do that after mercedes exchanged their star with a generic skull. for nostalgic reasons. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill! At first I was going to disagree with OP... but after looking back and forth, I will agree on the fact that chained women looked a lot better than the current theme. I like the current color better, though. Perhaps a middle ground could be found. During my trip to Europe, I made a stop at Notre Dame and found that the interior was pretty terrifying in detail.
In path of Exile, at its current state, a simple skull and lion head is... well... to simple, but there could be reached a medium where perhaps there are sculptures of suffering with skulls... rather than chained-up women. Something more elaborate would definitely be a better option. Perhaps a lion in a fierce stance crawling up the mana globe, while a suffering figure for the health globe? Have a look at Notre Dame interior sculptures for reference... they're quite fascinating (freaked my wife out for sure... heh). Anyways, I think it's an important theme decision and OP did the right thing by bringing it up again, even though it was mentioned before. PoE is a piece of art and I think that UI should reflect that. " You're agreeing with me here - something extremely common does not make for good brand iconography, because it lacks distinctiveness. Even the McDonald's M has a unique font and colour scheme. " I don't know about last time because I wasn't there, but the reaction this time was entirely expected. The arguments used are by and large the same made any time anyone on the internet does something that could be seen as "politically correct". " Have you seen the threads on this subject? " that's right, but the "girls theme" could have been improved though. " i read the threads and found most posts got it totally wrong as the game still contains alot of nudity and other not politically incorrect stuff like templars without pants. what i wanted to say is that i think most posters didn't think of the "game identity" as a valid argument and jumped on the "politically corectness" band waggon. "keep them cause we got used to them" doesn't sound like a convincing argument, blaming someone to being overly politically correct is much more powerful and intimidating. that frontseatgamer interview with jonathan got me thinking alot about ggg's strategy with "just introduce or change things and adjust them later". while i can understand and deal with that when it comes to skills and mechanics, there is a red line when it comes to features which identify the game for me. alongside the gritty and intense dark athmosphere, free to play, no "pay to win", fast gameplay and impressive skill display it has been the old user interface. i looked on pictures on imgur and could easily identify poe by the girls. yes, they probably have been a bad brand iconography but in my opinion you should have age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill! I still think that feminism and the likes of the one female who's name I shall not mention (not worth it) and super-sensitive people that take showers in raincoats are the reason behind the change. And I am not even in the conspiracy band-wagon, I don't believe in alien abductions, secret government programs for exterminating humanity and chem-trail plots.
But I strongly believe the bolded part I wrote up there IS the reason. There was nothing wrong with the previous UI orbs (imho, they were too big but that's just my lonely opinion) there is nothing wrong with this one either so I don't really care, I just hate changes for the sake of the changes and especially if they were made because one very small group of people is too sensitive to mature content. Personally, I'd come out clean about it, about the complaint's and I would put nude Greek Gods instead to celebrate the beauty of the body and piss the super-sensitive group even more by saying, "well ok sure, these look even better than those saggy females that you thought are too perfect or too tortured". I wish a nice day to all of you :) "Path of Exile be a online Action RPG set up in tha dark fantasy ghetto of Wraeclast. Well shiiiit..." - Uzicorn, for teh children. " I actually believe that they wanted to change it to make you feel more 2.0. The HUD is the thing you just see in the game from the first time. Immidiatly when you log into the game you see a new HUD. And since chained ladies were already in the old HUD they couldn't use them here. The general agreement in the other thread was that it should be one chained girl and one man, since it is rather symbolic and a very general thing about wraeclast, chains just fit the lore so well, since they are basically everywhere. It symbolizes well how actually Wraeclasts destiny is chained to your exile and since there are 3 males and 3 female exiles and the templer it would be just fair to make one female and male in chains for our globes. The Lion and the Skull... well it is always easy to find a good explanation for Skulls, but if the Lion stands for Marceus than GGG did a damn well job of hiding him from us... And actually I assume the name Lioneye might not even be his real name. The Lion was very likely the symbol of Chitus reign, since it is visible on the Apex, so Marceus might have been the Eye of Chitus, earning him that name. However both have not much to do with the current lore... Chitus is dead, Marceus is as well... but considering Doedre and Maligaro that doesn't seem to mean much (Shavronne always seemed alive to me, since she said in the story that she had to enable the barrier at prisoners gate and the karui never went inland so it seemed to be active... however someone would had to have disabled it since Piety enables it. Piety now says that Shavronne died to Brutus, but it was much more interesting with that one being a bit more open (not to mention that she must have sucked, Brutus isn't that hard). |
