You can use the temple corruption instead of the Vaal Orb. Might up your chances. Not sure.

Pretty sure it doesn't up your changes for +1 lvl.
As far as i can tell it only rolls once for each outcome(vaal if it can,+1 or 23%) and ofc only a maximum of 2 of those will roll.

Chance to get +1lvl with vaal orb are 1\20.

do you have a list of the possible outcomes? the best I found was from the wiki

Gems

No effect (other than adding the corrupted property).
Add or subtract one level. Max level gems can exceed their normal maximum this way. A corrupted gem at the normal maximum will not continue to gain experience.
Add or subtract 1-10 quality. Gems can have up to 23% quality this way.
Change the gem to its corresponding Vaal Gem.

as you can only go as high as 23 quality, that would negate the add 4 - 10 quality result.

gem I am planning to corrupt does not have a corresponding Vaal gem

depends on how the logic is coded. does it still roll one of the invalid results but counts it as "no effect" and changes to corrupted? or does it roll against a list of valid results? also depends on whether each result is given equal weight

if the former, and assuming that "no effect" is an actual rolled for result and not the default if an invalid result is rolled, it would appear the odds would be 1/24.

if the latter, then odds for a 20/20 gem that doesn't have a Vaal version, odds should be 1/16

Worst luck ever on vaaling empower gems.
4 ripped to lvl 3
1 ripped to lvl 3 and reduced Q to 10%
1 ripped to lvl 2 WTF

Leveling 3 more now :D
I did get 2x 21/20
Spell echo and a faster casting.
Also zero succes on 6x 20/20 Arc

I just use the 1GCP recipe, cheap but takes time.
Empowers I spend 20gcp on.
Vorici can shove his fuse up his [removed]
Get an item that has the ability to give Socketed Gems +1.
Apologies for the slight necro...

Was looking around the forum for posts about the odds of corrupting +1 to gem level. Not sure if the odds are different for regular gems vs the enlight/enhance/empower gems. I'm also not sure if anyone knows the actual odds, but I've seen 1/8 and 1/20 mentioned. Thought I'd throw my unusually bad luck with these things out there in case anyone was curious:

I corrupted 28 (edit: forgot to specify they were all enlighten gems) in the last ~7-10 days.

-1 level: 2
No change or change in quality: 26
+1 level: 0

It stings, but such is life with corrupting. I've bricked a lot of 2 socket tombfists and yokes lately, about 75% of them. They seem to have extremely high rip rates. Conversely, I corrupted like 80 mark of the elder and only bricked about 1/10th of them. Never did get the Level 21 Wrath corruption out of all of them.

EDIT: Have now corrupted 31 enlighten gems... still no level 4. Seems like I'm approaching impossibly bad luck, if the 4 outcomes are truly equally weighted.

Pretty sure it's 50/50
I'm sorry about your bad luck, Vicariously, but we know the corruption outcomes quite well by now.

for gems, there are four categories:

(1) nothing happens
(2) becomes vaal version. If no vaal version exists, this is equivalent to "nothing happens"
(3) quality changes. This has an equal chance to be anything from -10 to +10, but caps at 23
(4) level changes. This has an equal chance to be -1 or +1

The categories themselves are equal in likelihood.

For equipment, the categories are:

(1) nothing happens (for supercorruption, this one becomes "turns into nothing")
(2) gain at least one white socket, with a 1/10 chance for a second, 1/100 chance for a third, etc. (for supercorruption, it automatically turns all sockets white)
(3) reroll item into rare (supercorruption turns it shaper or elder with high enough ilvl)
(4) gain a vaal implicit (two implicits with supercorruption)

Again, these four categories have equal likelihood.

You've just been unlucky.

Short answer: Yes... you can get 21/23% from a 20/20 with the double corruption.

Long answer: You really should make the attempt to understand what is happening rather than simply asking if certain results are possible.

You mean like by asking questions to understand what is happening? Some people crack me up man ...
