how to create 21/20 gem?

did some searching in google and the forums but not finding all the information I needed for getting a gem to level 21/20

want to confirm I have the correct process so I don't have to start over. this is for a SSF character, so won't be able to just buy one

-- level a gem to 20

-- either level quality to 20 or use recipe to create a level 1/20 gem and level it back up to 20

-- once I have a level 20/20 gem, use a Vaal orb to corrupt it and hope RNG rolls the +1 to level

assuming above is correct, I believe I saw a post that said the odds of getting the +1 via a Vaal orb was 1 out of 8. can anyone confirm if that is correct and if there is any way to improve on those odds via additional crafting recipes?

many thanks for any assistance

There is no way to improve the odds but 1/8th seems about right.

You can use the temple corruption instead of the Vaal Orb. Might up your chances. Not sure.
thank you for the replies.

was the rest of my post correct as far as having to get to level 20/20 before using one of the corruption methods? you can't corrupt a 20/0 and then improve the quality after you see if you get the +1 level to 21?
To help with the odds, if you really want a 21 gem, level like 16 of them to 20 and corrupt them all (6 in offhand + two 4 sockets).

Also you can corrupt a couple of them until you get a 21 without quality, then relevel the rest, hoping for 21/20.

No, you can't. Corrupted items are immutable by game design (exception: modifying sockets via Vorici), so corrupted gems can't be changed in any way (including improving their quality).
retired from forum because of censorship and discrimination

i never bothered with corrupting gems until recently. rng jesus hates me so id always just buy my corrupted gems insttead

but from doing a couple temple runs i came across the room where it would corrupt a gem twice

so im like whatever. my first run it ruined my gem to like 16% quality or something. the second time was with a level 20/20 quality rallying cry. i couldnt manage to sell either of them before for cheap so i just figured whatever lets see what happens. got it to level 21 and 20% quality. cool! but then i noticed i already had a lvl 21 20% quality rallying cry. so now i gotta try to sell that one off too but at least maybe i can get a bit more for it if someone even wants that gem

anyways, that leads me to my question i was wondering

is it possible to use the double corruption altar in the atzoatl temple to say, roll a level 21 23% quality gem? i know the odds are probably stacked well against it, but theoretically could this even happen?

or does that just say, corrupt a normal gem to also have that vaal skill, and also potentially change the level or quality of the gem, or potentially do nothing at all?

sorry i still cant figure how this all works and if this is even worth my time bothering with? i just kind of figured that maybe id be able to get a level 21 23 quality gem somehow out of the deal.
yes, since the temple offers you 2 corrupts both can happen. I've already seen a 21/23 gem on the market.

For supply I usually put 5-6 of the gem i want to corrupt in my second weapon set. this way I dont have to invest much currency or harm my build with failed corrupts.
You say Prison Cell, I hear 'Holiday'.

Short answer: Yes... you can get 21/23% from a 20/20 with the double corruption.

Long answer: You really should make the attempt to understand what is happening rather than simply asking if certain results are possible.

well thats all i needed to know. now i see where all those expensive 21/23% gems on poe.trade must have came from. i wondered if it was some kind of hack or something. i skipped incursion league so this temple thing was all new to me. then i came across that double corruption thing and wondered about it

i bet my odds would be astronomically slim. i wouldnt try something that would already have a vaal skill attached. in fact i dont even like to gamble on those things id rather just sell a 20/20 non corrupted gem and let someone else take the chance. i got a 21/20 on my 2nd attempt, so im basically calling that a win and quitting while im ahead. knowing my luck with corrupting id probably brick a dozen more 20/20 gems before i ever get another good one.

thats why i tend to just sell them after im done leveling them out. i figure i'd have to be a popular twitch streamer or whatever just to kind of luck with the rng to ever see a lvl 21/23%

but just say on a gem that doesnt have a vaal skill attached to be an outcome of this double corruption, say i take like a regular 20/20 sunder or concentrated effect or something? how astronomically low do you think my odds would be for it to corrupt into 21/23, or how many times might i expect to have to go through it? i know rng is rng, but im still a little curious about how this all works. i cant really seem to find much on the wiki

and also say like the vaal skills that already are corrupted like vaal cyclone. i wouldnt be able to double corrupt those, and i'd have to start with the regular cyclone skill. but still i see a vaal lightning strike up on poe.trade level 21 and 23 quality, and i still dont understand how it can corrupt it twice, changing both the level, quality, and giving it the vaal skill.

or maybe theres something more to it? i just got a little confused as to how this was even possible for these gems to even exist outside of as glitch or something in the game. until i seen the temple i always figured once you corrupt a gem, thats it. and either if ur lucky the level or quality might rise up, but never both. and it wouldnt raise the level or quality if it turned it into a vaal skill. thats just always what ive figured just from playing the game anyways. now i still dont know how something like a 21/23% vaal lightning strike can even exist, because wouldnt it potentially take 3 corruptions to make that all happen? unless it can double corrupt an already corrupted item which i kind of doubt is possible. i just cant see how this gem could even exist.
