Help me with Summoner Witch - dies a lot
Hello there,
I'm playing a Summoner Witch, actually LV 59 in Ambush League Merciless. My problem is, that she dies a lot, but the Minions almost never die. I'm quite new to PoE, this is my first character and I tried to do a lot by myself, so i never traded Equipment or Orbs, all is self-farmed. I summon 9 Zombies and 3 Spectres (both support with Minion Life/Minion Damage or Elemental Bonus for Minions), throw Firestorm and Fireball and hava Purity of Elements and Clarity Aura. Can anyone tell me, what I've done wrong and what I should change with the equipment? Thanks! It's simple, you just have no life. Refund some points to get Written in blood and Holy strength clusters, something like that for example. You'll get back the points I've removed in your next levels. You should also get some auras nodes, they are very useful to summoners. With your tree, you have an almost direct access to Influence, Sovereignty and Leadership (just the first two nodes). Get the two remaining 8% life nodes in witch area too.
Regarding your gear, change your shield for an archon kite shield which have high implicit all res, try to find one with as much res and life as possible. Get a reduced mana gem, and link it with your purity, clarity and a vitality gem. Vitality will help you and your minions. Get an armor with a good life amount. Zombie setup: remove minion res and replace by a melee support (splash, multistrike, faster attack, melee phys damage, added fire damage, etc.). That will compensate the loss on the tree. And I would also remove rarity in fact, for another melee support, but that's up to you. 4L your boots and put your specter here. Use a dps support as 4th gem (faster casting, remote mine, etc.) Use flesh and bone offering, they're really great to boost your minions. Killing faster will help your survivability. Item rarity is only needed on your cull setup if you cull fast enough. I use Arc with faster casting for this purpose. Enfeeble everything, you can even use the curse to direct your minions to the target of your choice. Use undying evangelists as specters, they will help your survivability with their bubble. Good support for a 4L are: minion damage, faster casting and remote mine, added fire damage or increase area of effect. They don't really need minion life. It's not much of a problem to get them from cruel difficulty. They will just be a tad less powerful, but there's not much to worry as evangelists from normal difficulty can even survive in merciless Sceptre of God. edit: changed suggested tree for even more life. edit2: for reference, here's what I successfully use at lvl 86, and gear is crap as hell, but auras help survivability a lot (base is grace, purity of elem and vitality, and I add hatred or PoL/PoF as needed). Ranger builds list: /917964 When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch? If the witches watching watches watch the same watch while you watch which witch watches which watch, they switch watches; then, the watch switching witches watch which watch you watch. Watching witches watch watches is not for the faint of heart... Editado por útlima vez por Panini_aux_olives#1967 en 27 abr. 2014 8:52:23

I never played a summoner but i don't have to, to give you some advice. Because one look at your skilltree reveals your problem: you haven't taken any life or es nodes. You took some but those are only enough to take you through act 1 normal. No wonder you die so fast in merciless. Another problem is that you're using es gear only. Pure es gear only makes sense after you have taken Chaos Inoculation (CI) in the skilltree, before that you're better off with a life based build and using armor/es gear. I would suggest switching to pure es after you have finished Vaal on merciless because you need some armor to survive this fight.
You should take a good look at this thread: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/479976 And before you switch to CI your build should look like this:
Spoiler
In Rathik's thread you will find all the information you need. Skilltree, which skills and gems to use, how to gear your summoner (life based and CI) and so on. To be honest, i fear you have to start a new summoner witch because rerolling your character at this point would cost you a few regrets which you probably don't have. And even if you had them you would need a lot of chaos to get your hand on some good armor/es gear for your level. Last but not least, there are a lot of summoner guides out there. I picked Rathik's because for me it looks like the best for someone who has never played a summoner before. Feel free to take a look at all the summoner guides out there. Everyone has a slightly different approach and the truth is: they all work. You just have to find the one that is best for you. |

Thanks for your feedback!
I used all of my regret orbs (i had 4) and used the points for the life options, and it's really better now. Maybe I can get some more and correct the tree. I'll try to get the suggested equipment, but first I need to read a bit about market and trading, because I don't know what in my stash is of any worth. I only own 11 Chaos Orbs and 1 Divine Orb, I don't think I get a lot for them. :( Also I'll try the gem combinations you mentioned :) |

11 chaos is plenty to make a viable summoner.
I've linked you my tree above, here's my gear:
Spoiler
As you see, it's MF oriented trash. With that gear, I have caped resists to 77, thanks to Purity of elt, about 5k armor with Grace (19k with Jade flask) and 2.3k hp. Dominus is just butter and I do maps up to 75 in party (I've never dropped such a map to run them solo). The important (and debatable) part about summoner is snapshotting, you'll get some insight about this in summoner guides. Try to get The queen's decree 2h sword, Sidhebreath amulet and a +2 minion 4L helm. Put your zombie setup in the helm, because zombies get more benefit for +skill than specters. Equip all these items when you summon your minion, then go back in town and equip your regular stuff. Be sure to put back your zombie gem in the exact same place in your regular helm. As long as your minion don't die, they will keep the benefits of those three items, which is a very sensible boost. Here's my current snapshotting gear:

But just 2 weeks ago I was using something much cheaper:
Spoiler
You can find the sword, the amulet and a +2 helm for 1 chaos each or less. Use the remaining chaos to boost yourself defensively. Is the sword a better option than this Midnight Bargain Wand? Sometimes I see this Wand in the chat but I don't know if he's good.

"I'd say it's not the same price. Queen's decree is dirt cheap and used only for snapshot. Midnight Bargain however... I would use this on a super expensive low life summoner build. But I may be wrong, I have no experience with such items. Ranger builds list: /917964 When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch?
