Controller / GamePad Support (D3 on Xbox comparison)

I've used a xbox360 controller and the program xpadder and it works great. The biggest issue was in using the dual analogs to setup a slow and fast mouse emulation dual setup to provide more reactive movement of the mouse but it worked out pretty well. It's been my favorite so far, and I can have the game go through the tv or pc speakers while I skype through a microphone hooked to the controller itself (since they each can play their own audio separate from each other) and it has programmable rumble features.

I've also used a android phone that has a built in physical keyboard and touchscreen to emulate a mouse with the app teamviewer and those controller apps that turn it into a handheld keyboard/mouse combo and it works surprisingly well. With this setup I think I can also get gesture control working as well, so I can just wave my hand in front of my device and control the game directly.

and of course the usual bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboards, both stand alones and as a combined unit (phone looking device with a keyboard and touch pad), work as well.

And with my pc either hooked up to my tv directly via hdmi/svideo, vlc stream from my desktop or just chromecast the screen it works really well along with a surround sound system. Any game just feels more intense for me on a widescreen 52" LED tv with a full media system.

edit - with a optical wireless mouse, just use a non reflective textured surface with a pattern on it. It takes pictures on a set timer to show how its moved and you want it to be able to make out those photos clearly to discern that movement. Even just printing a black and white texture patterned sheet of paper will give it something it can use.

Print something like this and it works wonders for your optical mouse

Thanks Joriel

Your post is amazingly helpful!

The thought of wiring up a phone/ipad had no crossed my mind but that just might work.

I will also download xpadder and your point of adjusting the analog sticks as mouse gesture controls(left = fast | right = slow) is a ingenious way to overcome the biggest hurdle when switching to a controller.

What are you resting your mouse on to move around accurately?

Secretly I am hoping for a GGG update for controller support thats a dead copy of Diablo 3's. I mean it is so smooth if you guys get a chance to try it you will be impressed.

I use a steelseries hard mouse pad....works great no complaints.

Remember that you can also set up the left and right clicks on the analogs, such as binding the /oos macro on the left analog click

There are the two analog stick buttons, 4 face buttons, d-pad, 4 triggers and the start/select buttons (16 buttons). In game we have 5 flasks, shift, mouse buttons and 5 skills on quickbar (14 buttons), add in a /oos macro and one to toggle and the x key to swap weapon sets and your set.

Just have to set them up in a manner that feels right to you and according to your build.

The most stark improvement in playing with a controller is with melee characters. It's hard to describe, but you're no longer clicking on things until they die, all of a sudden you feel like you are your character, swinging at things until they die. An ARPG designed for a gamepad is much more fun than mouse and keyboard.

That said, I don't think it would be a very great improvement for PoE unless they redesigned a lot of the UI to support it. I don't even want to consider what it would be like to manage inventory with a gamepad, something haphazardly Two World's 2ish I suspect.

Edit: I second the nostromo speedpad recommendation. I have a really old version, but it's still much nicer to have that in my left hand than a keyboard.

How would it work without mouse control? What if you need to target something at the corner of the screen, say Storm Call on a pesky Necro? Or quickly teleport (LW/LS) out of danger?

On an unrelated train of thought, would it work if a third party controller (with its own support software of course) just mapped keys to buttons and used a joystick to simulate the mouse?
Xbox pad is good

You can program the deadzones (so it moves faster at max movement, slower at minimal) and the sensitivity of the mouse to analog nub conversions to boost/lower the speed of it as well as making two versions of it on a dual analog controller.
I prefer the ol mouse and keyboard ! How else would I have gotten carpel tunnel and these man boobs!!!!!!!!!!
i tried setting up an xpadder profile for this game, but its pretty buggy and i wouldnt risk it on any difficulty other than normal.

diablo 1 on playstation had really good controls.

i would love controller support :)
