Thanks for the tips. I was just practicing ED + contagion to get me to chaos slinger, but man does it feel clunky at low levels. I think that recommendation came from previous patches, so might attempt this instead.

I tried to practice with ED/C as well, but really wasn't a fan (both slinger and self-cast).
In the end, Soulrend + Bane seemed to be much more efficient as far as I could tell.

You mean taking Bane around level 30 through maps instead of chaos slinger? Even people on the Bane builds are talking about leveling as slinger, do you think Bane is in a better spot for that or does souldrend make it good for leveling? I'll probably stick to chaos slinger for the fun gameplay anyway, it's the level 1-30 that I need to learn with stormblast / frost mines. But if you have any guides detailing soulrend/bane leveling I'd be interested.

Ah yes, I meant picking up Soulrend/Bane around level 25-30.
And I don't think Bane itself is better. Soulrend has insane DPS early on, and combined with the curses from Bane, it worked pretty well with my playstyle.
It's probably not objectively better than ED/C, but I like it more. ;)
And below 25, I guess you can really take whatever gems if you're not racing.

I'm new to chaos builds too, just learning. Makes POE so fun when it's totally unique from previous plays.

Basically two spell slinger links to start:
SS + Soulrend + GMP (lesser to start)
SS + Essence Drain + Contagion
