[3.13]🏹 Poison Barrage-VF / Scourge Arrow / TR PF | Bottled Fortify | The Tankiest Ranger + High DPS

greloziom,

Look like you grabbed the most expensive upgrade (Aul+Malev) first. It's OK if you'd like, but it is not the best one for starter economically.

Your ring lacks Despair curse on hit. This is a big upgrade for a cheap price. You can manually cast Despair, but in the heat of a battle, it is not optimal. We've advocated for Despair on hit since March 2020 and other builds seem to do the same now. Despair on hit is practically better than self-cast Despair or Witchfire Brew flask.

Your Viridian jewels are suboptimal. You want +% Life and +% Attack speed with bow. Remember that the higher AS you are, the shorter time to channel 5-stage SA you do.

See my other comments below.

Hi Wolfie!

Sorry, could have linked my PoB.

I have upgraded a bit recently:

https://pastebin.com/ktGhBh9Y

New: awakened&alt gems (need to lvl up these and qual 3ex~). New amulet (annointed - 16 ex). The armor is/was 5 ex the moment i bought it. 2 rings were 0.8~1 ex. Boots - 50c, gloves probably cheap as I do not remember. Helmet probably too. Cinderswallow ~1 ex, cluster jewels around 0.7ex each.

So yeah, more like 30 ex currently, and I am struggling with survi (sometimes get one-shot). It is vital to highlight that mechanically I suck, as I do not know the boss/mobs/ing mechanics, so dunno how to behave ing (pretty new, esp. to lvl 80+ - my 2nd character, same league).

BUT I can say that my survi is far from the Clips, same about the damage.

You've invested mostly in offensive stuffs, and your survivability doesn't get enough attention it should. Remember that you've got what you invested. The defense layers are granted by proper items, not by default. Like Viktranka said earlier, if you don't have the listed gears, you don't have the tankiness the build promises.

Q: How to know how many wither stacks do I have currently (As I believe that's something different than HoA-stacks).?

It is not displayed, but you can use below (rough) formula to calculate the estimated # of withered stacks on enemies:

APS: your attack per second.
#Proj: # of your projectile/explosion (Blast Rain).
%chance: your chance to wither on hit. Withering touch gives 25%, with Divergent Withering touch quality, you have 30% chance to wither on hit.

Number of withering stacks per sec: 0.6 * APS * #Proj * %chance

Let's say your BR has 5.0 APS, 14 proj (BR), and 30% chance to wither on hit. The # of withered stacks generated per second by Mirage Archer (MiA):
0.6 * 5.0 * 14 * 0.3 = 12.6 stacks per second (the cap is 15).

You link Inc Duration support to BR-MiA; let's say your withered stack lasts for 4.5sec --> more than enough to keep the 15 stacks on enemies 100% time.

"

Furthermore, regarding the upgrades going forward, what should I consider now?

I want to go with the following (in that particular order):

1. gems - qual/missing awakening/alternate quality
2. quill?
3. Definitely need more survi - what to do? I have some random gloves/boots. Also, there is room to improve for the ringsa&belt too.
4. Some of the fossils are kind of expensive, but I will play some casino with bow crafting (I assume that change of the armor needs to be paired up with the bow change).

I also suppose that I can use another aura only after I got the mana cost reduced via chest (so it is gonna take some time)as for now I need the 30%+ mana unreserved with 2 heralds and malevolence (no mana thanks to the amulet) or I would need to change one of the flask to mana.

Jewels - is the watcher's eye required here? Or we can just get by with the jewels that you have mentioned in the build?

In my opinion, I as a nub player, would benefit more from survi first and then top it up with the offence. Have fought conquerors, the fights lasted 2min+, but as long as I can do it deathless I am happy (my goal is to learn the mechanics before the new league start). Haven't done Sirius on this character yet. Map clear (83 lvl, dunno what T is that) is OK.

Thanks a lot.

1. Alternate qual gems --> see my other post earlier.
2. What is quill? If you are comfortable with Dying Sun for bossfight, just grab a quiver with T1/2 life + #chaos DoT multi (and if you can #DoT Multi). Otherwise, go with quiver with +1 arrow and #chaos DoT Multi.
3. Tailwind boots are great for survivability as it offers more action speeds. Shoot faster = less time to stand still channeling SA, and move faster = good.
Gloves: see the gloves in the PoB. Fenumus is great. A better version is one with a +1 frenzy charge corrupted.
4. For mana issue, either preserve some mana or bring an Enduring flask (either hybrid or mana). If you want to free that slot, you should get a chest with -15mana cost that makes your SA spend 0 mana.

Auras: Malev(free), HoA, F&S, HoThuner (if you play V-Rift). If you want to fit another aura, Arctic Armor is the best candidate since it synergizes with our build, esp. when standing still channelling SA. Otherwise, you can leave some room for shooting SA as long as you don't have the -mana cost. In such a case, allocating one point for mana leech is also a good thing to experiment with.

Flask: Vinktar flask that grants flat damage to attack (really great with V-Rift). Coralito is a good one to have for you, too. I'd highly recommend Coralito until you can get 5sec poison duration without it.

The WE with Malev is one of the best, but it's expensive. A well-rolled Viridian jewel will be sufficient until you can afford a WE (Malev DoT multi).

I'm preparing for Flashback league and thought this looked like an interesting build.

The post advertises it as "Ultra Tanky" but reading through the last 12ish pages, I see some say they feel very squishy.. so which is it, and why are they feeling squishy?

I would not recommend this build for short events that only last 1-2 weeks.

Tankiness is granted by proper itemization. As Vikantra mentioned earlier, you got what you invested.

Thank you once again, seriously!

I hope to find some time as the year-end is approaching and I am busy at work, can't find time for gaming.

I will apply these steps and the things that you have mentioned.

On a side note, I know that most of the people playing PoE are the players who played the game before and play it for a long time (as the game is simply awesome), but maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to think of a noob-friendly section regarding the prioritization of char progression? Most people know what to do and prioritize the things, however, not only you (and the other contributors to this topic) save time but also it would make the guide even more valuable.

Thanks!

much obliged Wolfie.

I'll be sure to check it out for next league instead.

Thanks for your suggestion. I totally agree that the guide could benefit a lot from a new player-perspective kind of guiding, e.g. item prioritization or character progression as you said, for new players to learn the ropes. Unfortunately, I'm pretty tied up at this moment as I have a newborn in addition to a full-time job. Any contributions / suggestions on how to make the build better, newbie-friendlier are much welcome.

Updates:

+ End-game PoB: add a DPS-focused aura setup.
  • Tankiness-focused auras (current): Flesh & Stone - Arctic Armor - Herald of Agony - Enlighten (lvl4) - Malevolence (free with Aul). This is used in tandem with our Blind on Hit from Silent Steps (2 nodes grant 15% chance to blind on hit). On a side note, this blind on hit setup is the one we've used in the Iron Reflexes tree since Harvest league. You can manually spec to Silent Step if you don't want to use a Thread of Hope and relocate your current cluster jewel setup.
  • Remind of the chance to blind on hit with SA (6 pods + init arrow) and Blast Rain (12 explosions). Assuming 15% chance base, rough formulas:
    • Chance to blind on hit with SA = 1- 0.85^7 = 68%.
    • Chance to blind on hit with BR = 1 - 0.85^12 = 86%
    • Combined, SA & BR grant (1 - 0.85^19) = ~96% blind on hit on average.
    • DPS-focused aura (new): Haste/Vaal Haste - Herald of Agony - Enlightnen (lvl4).

+ Add new items to lvl64-85 V-Rift (Thundermist gloves, inpulsa chest).

Note: if you prefer blind on hit, I highly recommend allocating Silent Steps as explained above. Don't rely on a single Abyss jewel that grants 4% blind on hit to replace your Flesh & Stone. It is OK to add such Abyss jewel after you allocate Silent Steps.

Also, consider allocating Arrow Dancing if you are deep-delving. AD grants 40% more chance to Evade Projectile Attacks 20% less chance to Evade Melee Attacks.

So I tried this build in Flashback as a "tryout" because I wanted to use this build as a league starter, but...

    God damn my character sucks.

Like, I did this build in regular Heist as a second character. Reached lvl 90, had some good gear ready, and I was clearing T16 at lvl 75 (although boss damage sucked hard, but nvm that)

But as a league starter... I already amassed 60 /deaths midway through act 6 (already half of what I have with my heist necro with 15 days /played).

Bosses one shot me and damage is severely lacking, takes so long to kill them. Is that normal? What are you guys' experience as a league starter?
As a League Starter I just stuck with Toxic Rain until like... act 7 or 8 or something since a friend found a Voltaxic Rift that I could swap into using for some proper Scourge Arrer play. I find playing as an off-brand TR user is a great way to just not have to care about gear so much, especially with the Alt Quill Rain that doesn't tank your damage. That thing is seriously nuts for saucing up a new character.

I'll also offer up my own POB here that I tinkered and tweaked with to suit my weird tastes for Scourge Arrow. Basically I decided I wanted a lot of chaos resist, but didn't want to use Circle of Nostalgia so as to keep myself as pure for RARE GAMING as possible.

    https://pastebin.com/HNbApKR7

I also never bothered going for the Malevolence Aul's + Watcher Eye combo since it was extremely expensive for what was merely an 'okay' gain in terms of extra damage. Props to the bow I managed to get for a spicy 1.5 exalts, and also the one I crafted in one set of fossils at the beginning of the League (and Tempering Orb'd to have +Chaos modifiers).
Just want to share footage of a build I've enjoyed playing recently. This is a versatile, non-Transcendence one. I'll try to put together a detailed guide over the holiday.

    Happy New Year!

    Hi, Wolfie!
Just wanted to say thank you for the amount of effort you put in this thread!
Had a lot of fun playing the build up to mid-league.
It's very fast, great at clearing, can take big hits, and it's very flexible in terms of flask setup, gem composition and gear. Awesome as a long-term project since I was not playing hardcore :)
One of the few drawbacks is life sustain, so you biggest enemies are degens and not being on full life (maybe i was playing soul tether builds for too long). Recover % life on kill might help, I just did not try it.
Looking forwad to finding out what you will come up with next!
    Happy holidays everyone!
