My POB says 21/20 vs 20/20 barrage gives me 15k more shaper single target dps which is tiny. From memory I also remember the tooltip having the tiniest of increases, so most likely the details line up to say: nope not worth the 4ex

You'd see better investments by getting a 21/20 or 21/23 ice shot for sure if you wanted to up gems.

In terms of A8 Sirus, yeah he's damn scary. I believe you preferred going raider but I'd say the bigger increase for ST you're looking for would be Deadeye's extra proj tbh (which is also good for all content anyways). But I'd understand if you'd stick with raider. Unfortunately I think defeating Sirus with more security would be investing into voidfletcher +arrow, fractal thoughts +arrow, circle of fear OR going another bossing character.

But you could scratch all that if you wanted to stick it out with simply gaining experience. What worked for me was getting the clean intermissions: Memorise the voice lines that go with each attack so you know when the safest time to dash under him to phase him would be, for example "rain of stars" where the meteors come down would be the riskiest whereas "creation itself" would be pretty easy since the beam is a pretty visible zone of danger. Other than that I'd say having the patience for storms and ground effects to dissipate and investing in higher damage gear will allow you to see far less sketchy mechanics. Doing him deathless or with 2 portals becomes a pretty feasible reality unless you get unlucky with mechanics (random stars)

The experience gain certainly the case for me to boss with my deadeye but I do still consider leveling my Saboteur up for bossing.

Volley fire does not improve single target. it adds arrows simultaneously, meaning they cannot hit the same target twice, it is, however, a potent jewel for clearing. I have been experimenting with volley fire barrage - arrow nova, it is quite fun but not as good as ice shot.
