What exactly are dex,str and intelligence for?

is there any place that i can learn what stats these 3 add? i like using maths when making a build, so it would be awesome if i could find some numbers and statistics about them :)
If you hit C in-game, and mouse-over each stat, it'll tell you precisely what each does.

Everything else is handled by passive nodes and items. :)
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.

+10 Strength: +5 life, +2% melee physical damage
+10 Dexterity: +20 accuracy, +2% evasion
+10 Intelligence: +5 mana, +2% energy shield
oh,thank you guys so much :)
then one more question, are bows considered melee weapons ? because in some games bow attacks are also considered as melee attacks
Then those games make no sense at all. Melee is melee, bows are not.
With Iron Grip (passive or support gem), you can have Strength apply to Ranged attacks though. Similarly, Iron Will makes it add Spell Damage.

The game does not adapt to you, you adapt to it.

in star wars you can throw your lightsabre = meleeweapon as range
so there are probably games where you can melee with bows :D
@osyrhc
i see. but then how can i find a way to increase a bow damage (im planning to play a ranger). i mean, if str gives only melee attack, it doesnt affect bow attack. then the only way to increase my damage is using passive tree. it is also possible to increase it by elemental attacks. but basic attack will only increase as my bow has higher base damage, which means i only need higher level items to make more damage(at least wih basic attack). is it correct?
