Minions are all the rage now, all buffed up and ready to be used, so it would only be logical that jump on that train and of course you are a logical person so it would only make sense that your next character should use minions.
But… but in your heart, in your heart of hearts you know minions suck, clunky, slow, never where you need them. Every time you tried to use them, they are a disappointment.
Are they making you angry, when you have to constantly revive them?
Are they making you want to rip them apart when they are stuck in some other room while you get swarmed by mops?
Are they making you want to fling these ripped up remains at the mops you want to kill instead of whatever they are currently aiming at?
If the answer is YES, then I have good news for you.

Idea behind the build:

This Spell deals (3-210) to (5-315), plus 4% of your maximum Life, as base Fire Damage
Explosion deals base Fire Damage equal to (15-24)% of the Minion's maximum Life
+(0-0.2) metres to radius
50% less Damage with Ailments
200% more Area of Effect if Consuming a Minion

and got buffed in 3.26 to:
Bodyswap of Sacrifice: Explosion now deals base Fire Damage equal to 19-29% of the Minion's maximum Life at gem levels 1-20 (previously 15-24%). Quality now provides explosion deals base Fire Damage equal to 0-5% of the Minion's maximum Life (previously 0-4%).

gives you an easy way to scale your damage by increasing the live of the minions that are used as fuel for the spell.
In the affliction league you could use dark marionettes to sustain the constant need for fresh minions.
But Riot nerved them when they were put in core. Changing the revive timer from 1 second to 4 seconds.
Making using just Marionettes impossible for a non ignite build. But they gave us also the solution for the nerved revive timer.
How it works:
We still use dark marionettes, but since they can no longer sustain the 0.25 detonations per second we are aiming for, we only use them as primers to create herald of purity minions. While mapping, the necessary dead enemies to sustain the needed kills to create herald minions, should be no problems. In Boss fights on the other hand, we lack the needed trash mops. Good thing we can create our own, with the unique ring ‘The hateful accuser’ that gives us the 'Penance mark Skill' we use penance marks to create our easy to kill trash mops, so sustaining the constant creation of herald minions.

There is currently a bug (since 3.23 so maybe it’s a future), that lets you use penance mark after (and only after) using a curse even whitout override said curse, what should not be possible. But hey it lets us skip having to anoint whispers of doom for a second curse, thanks riot, i guess.
(has not benn fixed in 3.26.0.)



The obligatory and always questionable rating:

Toughness: 5/5 (outside of Insta-kill skills you can face tank pretty much anything.)
Speed: 3/5 (while the skill itself has a nice radius and decent damage, the clunkiness and the lack of movement speed hurt)
Budget: ?/5 (T16 can be done, as long as you have the unique ring, with what drops on the ground and some portal usage. For Ubers bosses, in 3.25, I invested about 140 Divines until I could do them)
Damage: 3/5 (in 3.25 I did about 9-10 million pinnacle dps, with the 3.26 buffs to elementalist and the skill itself it should come out to 12-13 million dps.)
Mapper: 4/5 (Lacks a little bit of speed but comfortably to play.)
Bosses: 3/5 (some bosses are easy, others… the fact that you can’t really decide where exactly you end up, when using the skill, makes some bosses, like maven, an absolute pain.)

What you can and can’t do:

Map modifiers that breaks the build: Less life and mana reg.
Map modifiers to avoid: Less block chance, Less defenses, Less max. resistances.
Ubers: Yes, but some can be hard/annoying.

The nessecarry items:


The Ring we need for the mark.
The gloves can roll different, but we looking for +level for our Herald, so here we are intrested in the base level, duration and minion. But it can roll another combination maybe, even better.
Svalin is just so good for any block based build, not taking it would be insane.

The flexible items:



Depending what you prefer and if your mana sustain is good enough you can sacrifice defence for more damage, with somthing like this.



What are we looking for in our gear:

To scale damage, we need in order of Priority:
1. Minion level
2. Cast speed
3. Minion Life
4. Increased Damage (we increase the damage of the minion explosion not the self-explosion damage, meaning only elemental/fire/minion and 'tag less' increase damage has any effext. Something like increased spell damage does nothing for the build.)
To scale our defenses, we are looking for (Priority is depended on what you already have.):
1. Resistances
2. Physical reduction
3. Max resistances
4. Block chance
5. Max. Life
6. Armor
7. Energy shield
8. increased life reg.
9. Flat life reg.
10. Life/Es on block.



Leveling:

Its not the best leveling skill but as long as you are ok with dying from time to time, and reskilling depending on the state of your character, it can be done since even in 3.25 the damage of Bodyswap of Sacrifice is rather high throughout the campaign and the lower maps, in 3.26 it should get even easier.
1. From 1-34 I recommend the using Raging spirit until you have access to golems and your first ascendency.

2. From 34 until you get your hand on a Dark Marionette, I recommend using Golems and liege of the Primordial as Primer to get the Herald of Purity loop going.

3. Somewhere at the end of the campaign or the starts of maps you will start running into mana Problems to solve that, I would recommend going into eldritch battery until you can solve it with stacking as many mana reduction modifiers as possible.

4. Somewhere in red maps the occasional deaths get more frequent, since teleporting into a bunch of mops is just not that healthy. This is the point where you get stuck for a while until you gear up your defenses. I recommend skilling down to versatile combatant for max block and unweaving stance for stun immunity until you get your hands on a svalinn and jewels to solve both problems without distorting your skill tree. At the same time, you get the necessary skills/items to get out of eldritch battery and into using the sliver of mana that is left after all that is reserved. And we get ourselves the Timeless jewel that gives us supreme ostentation so we can ignore the attributes altogether.
