[3.23] Martyr Trapper Ascendant



Intro

Hi everyone!

Affliction changes (especially Wildwood Ascendancies) encouraged me to revisit one of my favourite concepts, build relying on Martyr of Innocence staff. It's strong, but extremely niche, so I've managed to make it work on very low budget. How hipster is it?
- Blood Magic
- Low Life
- 75/75 block
- five curses
- 28 lvl Explosive Trap
- Crazy eHP and survivability for a trapper

Pros:
+ 20 million dps (without flasks)
+ 190k eHP (without flasks too)
+ Relatively cheap, even Fordidden Flesh/Flame are like 20c for this build
+ Can do all map mods
+ Hard to kill (Determination + 75/75 block + life/es gained on block + recoup + life gained on trap trigger + Corpsewalker regen)
+ Excels in encounters where you're flooded with enemies (abyss, beyond, wildwood), blocking hits heals you and increase dps even more thanks to Martyr of Innocence
+ Can be a league starter
+ No cluster jewels (I hate them, so a pro)

Cons:
- Average clear speed, it's an Explosive Trap after all
- Requires few key unique items to fully work
- Synergistic build - if you miss some important piece, you will have bad time
- Degens can hurt
- Capping resists can require some effort
- Ascendant so after Merciless lab we need to respec some passives (although respec points from quests should be sufficient).

DPS calculation:
PoB doesn't support Swift Assembly Support, to emulate it I used a custom modifier. It's roughly 60% more trap throwing speed.


Ascendancy

Ascendancy order: Trickster -> Path of the Shadow -> Necromancer
- Why Trickster?
We use many different masteries, it's the highest DPS increase possible. Slowing nearby enemies is nice too.
- Why Necromancer?
We use Bone Offering with 100% uptime to cap block.

Wildwood Ascendancy - Warlock
Sanguimancy. Life reservation efficiency make this build possible, so take it first.
Ravenous - surpsisingly good and useful. You need to cast it once at the beginning of map. There are only six monster categories. Some locations contain almost exclusively one type (betrayal safehouses, heists, breachstones etc.).
Creeping Lobotomy + its powerup - very powerful, but situational.

Bandits
Kill all. We stack so much crit multi that diminishing returns make 20% from Alira pretty underwhelming. That 2 passive points will boost dps much more.

Pantheon
Major: Brine King for freeze and stun immunity
Minor: Abberath to prevent burning ground from hurting us.

Items explaination

Amulet:

Best in slot, costed me 20c. Anoint with High Explosive or extra Frenzy Charge.

Chest:

Best in slot, boost to dmg, armor and ES. Until you have it, 4L Infernal Mantle will do the job.
Use B-R-G-G-G-G or B-B-R-G-G-G with Blood Magic Keystone for sweet 10% more life. Caution! This mod prevent us from using '15% increased life' mastery, as it has a life tag.
Bought mine for 150c.

Weapon:

Martyr obviously, buy the highest damage mod. Attack block roll is irrelevant, we're overcapped anyway. Martyr is so strong mechanically with Explosive Trap (each explosion adds 100% weapon damage, so damage effectiveness is much higher than nominal) that mirror tier +5 staves are net dmg loss.
Bought for 15c. Until you have it, use Nycta's Lantern.

Ring:

Allows penta curse setup. Somewhat meta, bought for 20c. Aim for high Cast Speed roll for our Arcanist Brand.

Boots:

Corpsewalker is mandatory for 100% Bone Ofering Uptime.

Helmet:

Aim for high life and resists, but with open suffix for Focus craft.

Rare Gear - life, resists, armor, ES.


Jewels:
Intuitive Leap - used near Witch startto save skill points

- Doryani variant, socket near Unwavering Stance. Search for ones with resists and spell block on small passives.
- insane one, bought it really cheap tho, as mods are only good for this build. Look for Offering Effect and Base Crit Chance. Last two mods are just a bonus.

This pair is very cheap, but gives us Cover in Ash and very underrated totem taunt. Unaffected by ignite is very useful too, block builds hate DoT.

Explosive Trap - Swift Assembly - Charged Traps - Awakened Elemental Focus - Awakened Added Fire Damage - Increased Critical Strikes/Trap and Mine damage, depending on your 6th socket colour.

Utility:

4L Aura setup
Detarmination
Enlighten - optional upgrade, if you don;t have it put an extra point in reservation efficiency near Champion of the Cause.
Herald of Ash - comparable dps increase to Skitterbots, lower reservation
Petrified Blood - amazing tool for our survivability. Let's say we recieve 1000 dmg hit:
50% goes through ES
500 dmg left
40% of that dmg is prevented by Petrified Blood
300 dmg left
Life loss from damage over time is almost completely nullified by single recoup passive.

2L Holy Flame Totem setup - excellent crowd control tool thanks to taunt. Enables Zealotry Watcher's Eye. Linked with Combustion for minor dps increase.

4L focus trigger setup - it's meant to guarantee 100% uptime od socketed spells.

Enhance - use until you get Offering Effect jewel. Swap to 6th curse after getting final Power Charge. Use Punishment for Damage of Temporal Chains for crowd control.
Enfeeble
Why no Desecrate?
It would be great and allow us to switch boots to something better. Unfortunately, all spells from helmet are cast simultaneously, so Bone Offering fizzles, as no corpses are present by the time it's triggered. I decided to use spare slot for Enhance, to alleviate the most annoying map mod (reduced block chance).

Tips and Tricks

Focus NumLock trick
Focus is an instant skill, so we can automate it by assigning it to NumLock Key (I use 7, because it's directly below NumLock key). Press the key, turn off NumLock and you have it constantly cast.

How to use Pacify
Sometimes we encounter extremely rippy rare mob or empowered boss. It's where this trick comes handy - curse mob with Pacify - after 6 seconds you will ger 4s window to damage it freely. But how to live those 6 seconds? Just recast Holy Flame Totem at the top of this mob. It will taunt it and prevent from doing anything else. Do not forget to attach Arcanist Brand. After 6 seconds you can just stand still and destroy monster with spamming traps. Very useful for early league Betrayal farming.

I mentioned taunting single, powerful mobs with totems, but you can also use it on rippy packs. Great thing is that they flock to your totem, making it easy to kill them all with a single trap.
