PLEASE HELP {respec ascendancy question}

I'm trying to respec my scion out of path of the shadow and into a different ascendant. i have 40 respec points available. is it not possible to change the "starting point" from shadow to something else???? i have no points allocated on the tree in any spot either. complete respec.

And you have at least 4 passive points unallocated?
I am emotionally & mentally drained through the sharking waters.
