noob idea, soul mantle vortex build

So I am thinking of running 6 linked soul mantle with vortex, which should allow me to place vortex where i want it away from me with ease. Since I am noob i have number of questions.
1.Damage would scale from totems as well as damage over time yes? should i prioritise one over the other.
2. scion with chieftain node as ascendancy seems strong, what else should i choose in ascendancy.
3. would self flagellation jewels help with damage if damage is done by totems?
4.would occultist be a stronger choice?
5. what would be the optimal support gems?
6. any other piece of equipment that would be useful?
7. As a majority of damage is done over time, ancestral bond isn't needed?
