Baleful gem costs mana to handle?

Maybe this is intended, but I noticed that if I move the Baleful Gem around in my inventory, it costs something like 15 mana every time I pick it up or put it down.

Of course that mana regenerates quickly, but I was just wondering if that was intended. If so, nice touch! :)
